Cross tells are used to highlight trends, benchmarks or safety conditions relating to maintenance equipment, personnel, training or processes. A crosstell is initiated to assist other maintenance or logistics personnel with similar equipment to do their jobs more safely and/or efficiently. Typically a crosstell will be initiated when a condition or trend is discovered regarding (but not limited to) a weapon system or common components that should be shared with other users or potential users. This information should be transmitted using DMS to ensure widest dissemination and ensure it is brought to the attention of unit commanders in order to prevent or mitigate mishaps, injury or damage to AF personnel, equipment or property. Typically crosstells will provide relevant background information and history and can include such information as NSNs, part numbers, specific location of problem areas, etc.
