Surface Movement Guidance Control System – SMGCS

Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control SystemSurface Movement Guidance Control Systems (SMGCS) refer to a systems used in Airports containing lighting, signs, and markings that allows an aircraft to operate to and from the runway in very low visibility in a controlled and safe manner.

The SMGCS provides guidance to and control of aircraft, ground vehicles, and personnel on the movement area of an airport. Guidance relates to facilities, information, and advice necessary for pilots of aircraft or drivers of ground vehicles to navigate the movement area and to keep aircraft or vehicles on the surfaces or within the areas intended for their use. Control means the measures necessary to prevent collisions and ensure traffic flows smoothly and freely.
